Many people like to do detox programs at the first of the year to reset their system after indulging during the holidays. While this is a great idea, it is important to detox appropriately according to the cold winter season.

How to eat in the winter season
Winter is a season of rest and hibernation. It is the time to eat warm, cooked foods that are nourishing and easy to digest. Common winter meals include roasted vegetables and fruits, slow-cooked meats, soups, and stews. Winter greens such as kale, swiss chard, collards, cilantro, brussels sprouts, fennel, and broccoli all lend a hand in gently detoxing the body during the winter season.
Additionally, spices warm the body from the inside out, supporting the immune system and digestion. Warming spices such as cinnamon, cardamom, peppercorn, garlic, onion, coriander, cumin, star anise, clove, allspice, nutmeg, paprika, cayenne, and so on are often used during winter recipes.
Detoxing during the winter season
Many people in the United States are familiar with detoxing via smoothies and juices. While this can be very helpful, it would ideally be best during the hot summer.
During the cold winter months, it is ideal to detox using warm bone broth vegetable soups. Recipes like this Liver Cleanse Soup (see recipe below!) are a great way to gently detox and reset during winter.
Hydration is always important during a good detox and is often neglected during winter. I always recommend drinking water at room temperature or slightly warmed. This will improve your digestion and help detox. Try adding a squeeze of lemon to boost your water’s detox and nutritional benefits. Remember, your goal is to drink half your body weight in ounces daily for proper hydration.
If you are mineral deficient, consider adding electrolytes to your water. These ones are my favorite- Goodonya and Re-Lyte!
More ways to support a healthy detox:
- Warm Epson salt bath
- Getting extra sleep
- Move your body daily- yoga, stretching, going for a walk
- Practice mindfulness- journaling, meditation, prayer, etc.- processing and detoxing your mind.
Conclusion
The ideal detox during the winter months is a bone broth soup cleanse, including my liver cleanse soup! Additionally, staying hydrated, getting adequate rest, gently moving your body daily, and practicing mindfulness all help to balance the body.
