Honey Baked Pears & TCM
Pears are a wonderful seasonal fruit that helps nourish and support the Lungs and Large Intestine in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). In TCM five element theory, the lungs and large intestine are associated with the metal element. The color associated with the metal element is white. Therefore, white-fleshed fruit and vegetables support the lungs and large intestine! Cool, right? (Check out our wellness soup to support your immune system!)
Pears, especially Asian pears, have a special property that nourishes TCM Yin and moistens the lungs and large intestine. Bosc pears, Anjou pears, and Bartlett pears still provide many benefits too! Any variety of pear will provide medicinal benefits for the recipe.
Pear season is in autumn when we tend to experience more dryness such as dry skin, dry cough, or constipation due to dryness. Honey baked pears are a great way to moisten dry lungs, large intestine, and skin naturally. Kids love this recipe, too!
Preparation is Key
In the autumn and winter seasons, it is recommend to bake the pears to add warmth and make them easier to digest. Walnuts can be added for a little crunch. Walnuts also benefit the large intestine health and are high in omega 3s and antioxidants. A drizzle of honey supplements the TCM spleen to improve digestion and increase Qi (energy). You may also sprinkle cinnamon and/or nutmeg to add additional warmth.
If you are experiencing “heat symptoms” such as feeling warm all the time, irritability, heartburn, or acid reflux, it is recommended not to use cinnamon or nutmeg. If you are experiencing internal heat symptoms, check out this recipe.
I’m sorry, but there is no vanilla ice cream, goat cheese, or brown sugar on top! This is meant to be a healing recipe. Eliminating frozen, sugary foods, and dairy will help relieve symptoms. I think you will be surprised how these honey-baked pears satisfy your sweet tooth!
Asian Pears
The best pears for this recipe are Asian pears, but any variety will do! I have found Asian pears at my local grocery store, Trader Joe’s, Sprouts, and the Asian Market. They were not organic, but I washed them well by soaking them in water and 1/4 cup organic white vinegar for 2 minutes. If you cannot find Asian pears, that is okay! You can use any type of ripe pears for this pears recipe.
